How would you go about creating a complex strucutre. All reference or do you already have in mind how it should be shaped and 'stacked'? And can you please give me advice on placing roofs on a single clustered structure like your castle and city? :3
Hi, the stacked buildings are based on references and the movies I've watched before. I actually draw architectural references before figuring out what to but in my composition. This whole composition is inspired from the movie treasure planet. Hope that helps.
Your painting is so beautifully rendered it pains me to mention this. A sailing vessel at dock would almost never have its canvas set as the wind would cause it to strain terribly against its mooring lines, possibly doing great damage to the docks or the ship itself and posing an extreme danger to anyone nearby. Also, unless these are auxiliary sails the lower square-sails seem too small for the size of the ship. Don't get me wrong, there are fewer things I love more than the sight of a tall ship with all its canvas flying, running close to the wind but the rendering of light and the fantastic cliff hanging city you've created might actually be better served if not competing for attention against the sails of the ship. It's almost like there are two different paintings trying to share the same frame.
Good to read some pro comments here, no worries man, I've been destroyed by professionals during school so I'm used to this haha. I graduated industrial design majoring in entertainment and I'm quite aware of all you said except for the specific part of the ship you mentioned. My goal here is to project what I saw in my head based on the book I've read. So before everything make sense, I had to put everything down first on canvas. Thing is I failed to communicate here resulting to your comment. Its a bit confusing, yes because I used a very low angle shot that took away the view of the whole docking area. The dock is quite long and just so happens that this ship was passing by (Maybe its too near for comfort perhaps) . Explaining this (what I am doing right now) completely shows how I failed to communicate the scene. Damage done though. Maybe I'll make a continuation of the scene where this ship is on full stop. Composition wise yeah, it could be better. Got so much more to learn. Cheers man.
